Mamasan | Where Gold Coast Dining Gets Its Mood
There are restaurants you visit, and then there are restaurants you return to. Mamasan, nestled within Oracle Boulevard in the heart of Broadbeach, has always belonged firmly in the second category. For over a decade, it has held its place as one of the Gold Coast’s most celebrated dining destinations, and after a considered renovation, it’s made a compelling case for why that reputation is well earned.
Step inside and the atmosphere does the work immediately. Concrete, charcoal and black wood set the palette, tempered by intentional lighting that creates contrast rather than fills a room. It’s moody without being unwelcoming, sophisticated without the stiffness that so often accompanies it. The tension between elevated and accessible is entirely deliberate. Mamasan calls it “Our House,” and that philosophy is felt from the moment you arrive.
Having called Oracle Boulevard home since the precinct’s early days, the fit feels intrinsic. Oracle attracts discerning diners, locals who know what they’re looking for and visitors who arrive with high expectations. Mamasan was built for exactly that kind of guest, and the precinct’s concentration of award-winning restaurants means it operates within a community that holds the same standards it does.
The menu travels across Chinese, Korean and Japanese culinary traditions, interpreted through a modern lens rather than confined by any single region. Dishes arrive as share plates, building across snacks, cold and raw preparations, small plates, dumplings and larger formats. The table evolves as the evening does, which is precisely the point. The beverage program is equally considered, with premium wines available by the glass through Coravin, a curated cocktail list, and sake and spirits chosen to complement the food rather than compete with it.
A handful of dishes have earned genuine Gold Coast legend status. The Korean Fried Chicken with gochujang, parmesan and almond snow is a plate guests return for specifically. The Spanner Crab Dumplings with coconut sambal bisque have been a defining dish since the early days. The Scallop and Prawn Toast with sesame and citrus mayo is the kind of plate people order twice at the same sitting. Under Executive Chef Sebastian Tan, the Dry Aged Roast Duck and Hong Kong-style Typhoon Shelter Lobster have joined the conversation, dishes that are rooted in authentic technique and bold in execution.
The renovation also introduced two spaces worth knowing about. The Akari Room is a warm, luminous space that sits almost unexpectedly within Mamasan’s broader aesthetic. Named for the Japanese word for light, it transitions seamlessly between intimate dinners and larger celebrations. At the other end of the spectrum sits the Private Dining Room, ten seats and an atmosphere that is deeply intimate. It’s the kind of room where important conversations happen and occasions are celebrated properly, the moodiness that defines Mamasan distilled to its most concentrated form.
Together, they reflect what Mamasan has always done well: hold many different versions of a night out under the same roof, and make each one feel entirely considered.
